Are these Cackling Geese?

I think they are Cackling Geese and not Canada Geese, but I am not positive.  According to allaboutbirds.org, Cackling Geese do migrate through Illinois, but they are ‘Scarce’.  National Audubon maps are in agreement that these geese migrate through Illinois, but uses the word ‘Uncommon’.  For the past about 5 years, I believe we have […]

Migration has begun ……

In an earlier blog, I told you that our Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Gray Catbirds, and Brown Thrashers are gone – they have begun their migration.  We now have Gray Catbirds again – here in our yard.  One was ‘meowing’ at me yesterday from a thick tangle of vines near the shore of our small lake.  But […]

What is going on here at our house?

Normally from mid-July until mid-September, there is not as much going on in our yard as in the previous spring and summer months, but this year is an exception.  We continue to have a good number of birds at the feeders and bird baths.  I am not sure how many House Finch families we had […]

Odds and Ends From Our Trip

Cleon and I had a wonderful time birding in Ohio.  I had been to Aullman Audubon back in the 1980’s with my Dad and liked it then – I liked it even more this time.  Cleon has never been birding anywhere in Ohio.  We both tend to think of Ohio as more flat, but there […]

All the new things going on!

Spring is the time for new beginnings, arrivals, and wild swings of weather.  If you have been watching the birdfeeder cam over the last few weeks, you have seen the feeders swaying in the wind – which does not seem to deter the birds at all. Here is what is happening in our yard and […]

Sorting out some geese: Snow, Ross’s, Canada, and Cackling

This morning, I posted some videos of Snow Geese.  My 2/15 blog was “Snow Geese – look carefully at each flock …….. ”  I included a few photos in that blog, but just knew I had more and lo and behold, when looking through some of my thumb drives, there they were.  With the exception of […]

Avian Flu – What Can You Do?

Avian flu is nationwide and this is the time of year when it is at its most deadly. One way this disease is spread is through wild geese and ducks who can be carriers of the disease and from the end of January through mid April is when they are migrating.  It is spread by […]

Counting Raptors

Cleon and I are traveling.  We left our house, bird feeders, birdbath, and our bird cam in very good hands.  Thank you Miles, Justin, and Jean! So we can relax and just enjoy a few weeks of birding. As I have written in this blog, one of the best places to look for raptors is […]
