This little, inexpensive upside-down suet feeder is an alternative for those who want to exclude blackbirds or black birds (the difference between which you can read about in Linda's ebook) from their feeder. We've had one for years and have only occasionally seen a starling trying to use it. Starlings seem to be able to cling to it and eat upside-down for only a few seconds before giving up. Other species don't even try. Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, Chickadees, Nuthatches, and even Carolina Wrens use it with ease.
I have never tried this sort of feeder, but I can see that it would be quite a discouraging one to starlings and probably grackles, also? And those two species of birds can empty a feeder in no time! We are lucky here in that although we do have starlings and grackles, they do not overwhelm us - at least not so far. A few are just fine. Dozens? - not so much. Thank you for sharing the photo so we could all see what thie feeder looks like. I any of you have other innovative feeders, please share with us. Linda
