Welcome to your Public Forum! Please use it to tell all of us what birds you are seeing in your yard, your neighborhood, on your balcony or fire escape, or in your favorite park. Tell us about any wildlife refuges you are visiting. And the birds you are seeing – what are they doing? Are they singing, nest-building, flying, foraging, sitting still and resting? Are they interacting with those of their own species or with others? Are they by themselves? In a flock? Ask questions and learn more about topics that are important to you. And remember, no question is too basic or simple – we all have to start somewhere.  If you are having trouble posting, have something to discuss with me, or have a question for me, please email me at lindahendricksspence@birdingbeyondthefieldguide.com.

Red-shouldered Hawk

Janelle C. from central Illinois sent me these 2 photos of a Red-shouldered Hawk nest.  She can see this nest from her back deck.  Janelle lives on a large property.  Her house is on the top of a hill and her property slopes down to a stream that runs along a woodland and that is where this nest is - it is a good distance from her house.  As you can see, she is at the edge of her camera range, but she did not want to disturb the hawks in any way by trying to get closer.  I thought that was an excellent decision as in my experience, hawks can be skittish around their nests.  And the last thing she would want is  for the parents to abandon the nest or to have one of them fly straight at her.

At first, Janelle thought there were two youngsters , but now she thinks it looks like 3 tiny fuzzy heads sticking up over the rim of the nest.  These 2 photos were taken a day apart.  Janelle told me she is happy to have them where she can watch.  She does have hummingbird feeders and loves watching them with all their antics, but this is such a different experience.  She is fascinated and checks on the nest every day - sometimes a couple of times a day! - through her binoculars.  Linda
