Welcome to your Public Forum! Please use it to tell all of us what birds you are seeing in your yard, your neighborhood, on your balcony or fire escape, or in your favorite park. Tell us about any wildlife refuges you are visiting. And the birds you are seeing – what are they doing? Are they singing, nest-building, flying, foraging, sitting still and resting? Are they interacting with those of their own species or with others? Are they by themselves? In a flock? Ask questions and learn more about topics that are important to you. And remember, no question is too basic or simple – we all have to start somewhere.  If you are having trouble posting, have something to discuss with me, or have a question for me, please email me at lindahendricksspence@birdingbeyondthefieldguide.com.

Day 10

Robin 1 seems to have completed her nest. The sides are fairly high and I think she has lined it. But no new nesting material brought today and no nest sitting. Is she loafing?  Procrastinating?  Or just not quite ready to lay that first egg?  She is close-by, but has not actually been at the nest. However, for some reason she took exception to a Blue Jay who was on the rim of the birdbath and she aggressively chased it off. She has allowed other Blue Jays to bathe, but not this one. I wonder why? What was it about this particular jay that she simply would not tolerate?

Robin 2 is a very different matter. She started her nest about 4 days after Robin 1 started hers. And as of yesterday afternoon, she is now sitting on that nest for several hours at a time. My guess is the egg laying has started! No loafing or procrastinating for her!

The first photo is Robin 2 - sitting on her nest. The second photo is the big picture of where these nests are. This is our garage door. Robin 1 is in the corner under the eaves where the satellite dish is - you can see how protected this site is. Robin 2 is at the left corner of the house - under the eaves and close to the security camera. Her site is not as protected and it is a breezy corner. However Robin 1 has to be able to tolerate a lot of activity around her nest. The robins who all used this site in years past have been fine with all the noise and movement, but this robin seems a bit uneasy? Skittish? She has to tolerate being close to the kitchen window where there is often movement and noise. The hose is right below her nest - Cleon uses that hose to clean the birdbath every few days. The side of the garage closest to her is where we park our car and so she has to tolerate it coming and going. She will also see people coming and going from our front door. The large birdbath and its camera are to the right of Robin 1 - about 25 feet. Time will tell if she can tolerate all that.
