Welcome to your Public Forum! Please use it to tell all of us what birds you are seeing in your yard, your neighborhood, on your balcony or fire escape, or in your favorite park. Tell us about any wildlife refuges you are visiting. And the birds you are seeing – what are they doing? Are they singing, nest-building, flying, foraging, sitting still and resting? Are they interacting with those of their own species or with others? Are they by themselves? In a flock? Ask questions and learn more about topics that are important to you. And remember, no question is too basic or simple – we all have to start somewhere.  If you are having trouble posting, have something to discuss with me, or have a question for me, please email me at lindahendricksspence@birdingbeyondthefieldguide.com.

A different sort of bird feeder.....

Mary D. from central Illinois sent me these photos of the new bird feeder she put up last fall for the winter.  She took these photos in January.  And as you can see, a Red-bellied Woodpecker and especially a whole lot of Blue Jays like it!  She said she had to fill it most every day - the Blue Jays have big appetites.  There are drainage holes within the feeder so the seed stays dry - even as this snow all melted.  You can see in the photo of the woodpecker how her husband mounted it to their deck railing.  I have never seen a feeder quite like this - it reminds me of a birdbath.  As you can imagine, it does hold a lot of seed.  Have any of you tried one like this?  if you did, let all of us know how it worked for you.  Linda

P.S.  I may just have to get one of these!!!!!
