Eastern Bluebirds!

This photo and the one on the right are from Barry Phipps – his backyard feeders here in central Illinois.

Since the holidays, some of my birding friends here in central Illinois have had more bluebirds than they have ever had – and that includes Cleon and me.  I did post photos in the Public Forum our friend Jim sent us of buebirds at his house which is about 30 miles north of us.  He told me he and his wife Judy normally have about 2-3 and this year they had at least 8 coming just about every day and sometimes several times a day.

Here are a male and female bluebird right in our driveway. Cleon grabbed his phone and took this out our kitchen window. We hardly ever have bluebirds here at our house and never before in winter.

My friend Barry sent me these photos of bluebirds at his suet feeders and wondered if this was unusual.  I think it is.  Most people who have bluebirds have special bluebird feeders which hold meal worms.  I have also heard of bluebirds coming to feeders that hold red fruit – like red raspberries.  And I have even heard of bluebirds eating scrambled eggs.  But I did not know they would come regularly to suet feeders.  The ones now in Barry’s yard are coming regularly to his suet feeders.  If you have thoughts about this, please use the Public Forum to tell us what you have observed.
