Purple Martins

Cousins Jean, Rachel, Jess and I went plant shopping yesterday.  This was Jean’s and my 18th year of doing this – always the first Friday in May.  We have several greenhouses we visit and buy all the plants we want for our gardens – we are both avid gardeners.

Normally I do not endorse or recommend any commercial venture, but I will make an exception here.  Zimmerman Greenhouse, 1386 E. 1050 Ave., Vandalia, IL.  This is one of the most beautifully laid out greenhouses and displays of plants I have ever seen.  Everything looks fresh and healthy.  The Zimmerman Family owns and operates this greenhouse right on their immaculate farm – they are Amish.  And the friendliest of people.  Always ready to answer any questions and to give any assistance needed.  There are also two very friendly large dogs that can be found stretched out and sleeping just about anywhere in and around the greenhouse.

Mr. Zimmerman, Senior, is the builder of these wonderful Purple Martin houses and has been doing it for many many years.  All are for sale and if you are looking for a Purple Martin house or gourd and are anywhere near central Illinois, I strongly recommend you give this place a visit.  He is full of knowledge on everything concerning these houses and Purple Martins and is willing – and happy! – to share all with you.  Cousin Jean has a Purple Martin house but has never had Purple Martins in it.  He gave her some valuable advice which she is taking.

Mr. Zimmerman has four big martin houses right along the drive you pull into to park and there are Purple Martins everywhere!  All flying, claiming holes, and above all – just chirping away!  I have never seen so many Purple Martins in one place – and Purple Martins so used to people that you can stand close to their houses and they just keep doing whatever it is they are doing.  You just cannot help but grin as you pull in.  What a wonderful sight!  And Mr. Zimmerman’s love of Purple Martins is infectious!
