Just had to show you!

And this is why I should NEVER go on vacation!

Brown Thrashers have long legs – you can sure see that on this juvenile!
Look what I missed by going on vacation! No more travelling in June for me! Both photos by Miles Campbell.

I have one more blog about our simply terrific birding experiences in Ohio which I will post tomorrow evening – Cedar Bog near Springfield, Ohio – which ended up being Cleon’s and my favorite place.  But I simply had to interrupt these posts to show you what was going on in our yard.  You might even see these 2 birds on the livestream from our birdbath – the thrashers use the bird bath every day.  A Brown Thrasher juvenile following its parent all over our front yard.  Thrashers have nested for the past 6 years in 2 places in our yard.

The first nesting area is in our long shrub border along our driveway – all big, mature shrubs.  The second is at the end of our inlet where there are big viburnums and a host of tangles of plants, grasses, raspberries, hickory and elm saplings, and the dreaded poison ivy.  And they forage in our large flower garden which is adjacent to both areas.  We can often see them tossing mulch every which way to get to something tasty underneath.  If you watch this livestream and see mulch on the cement this time of year, you can bet it is the thrashers.  This youngster will be learning from its parent!

Thanks to Miles who helps us with our yard work and sent me these photos this afternoon.  We manage about an acre and this would not be possible without him.  And he takes care of everything when we are gone: fills the feeders, cleans and fills the birdbaths, and waters all my plants.  You might have seen him from time to time on the livestreams.  Thanks, Miles, for your continuing hard work but especially for these 2 photos.  And to think that here I am in upstate New York in the beautiful Catskills and I missed this!!!!!
