Snow Geese near Lake Decatur

Around noon today I spotted about a dozen Snow Geese on the southeast side of Decatur. I live about a mile east of the lake in a residential neighborhood. No idea where they might be thinking of landing. I love the contrast of white and black when they are flying around. Susan Shaw

Good Morning, Susan!  In my opinion, seeing Snow Geese this time of year here in central Illinois is unusual - and neither Cleon nor I have ever seen any at - or flying over - the two large lakes and surrounding harvested corn fields that are close to us in fall.  We see plenty of them in late January and February but never now - in late October and November.  And I wonder why that is?  Because the geese are moving south at this time.  Do they not fly over us here in central Illinois?  Or do they fly over us, but just not stop here?  If any of you reading this have some ideas or observations about the fall migration of Snow Geese, please post!

And Susan, I agree that Snow Geese are just beautiful when they fly - that white and black contrast is striking.  I also like that they are full of chatter - in fact, I often hear a flock before I actually see it.  When we have a flock on our small lake, we can hear them chatter all night to each other.

And now you have me looking forward to February when we see so many of these flocks on all our lakes and in so many harvested corn fields!  Linda

What a wonderful sighting!  And it is more unusual to see them at Lake Decatur this time of year?  Linda
