Happy winter to all of you!

We decorated around the birdfeeders – you can see our efforts on the birdfeeder cam.  I channeled my Inner Crow!

These are not holiday or Christmas decorations, but winter decorations.  I know it is still fall until the winter solstice on December 21, but believe me when I tell you that is a technicality!  It may be in the high 30’s here today, but we also have a sustained wind of between 20 and 25mph so it has a real bite to it and Cleon and I just about froze when were out there twice already today.  Even though there is much red, you will also notice there is no Santa or his reindeer or angels or carolers or anything relating to Christmas – all the decorations are for winter and will remain in place until about March 1st – spring begins about March 21st.

And Cleon and I had to laugh – we do not have nearly as many birds at our feeders as we have had in past years, but we both got scolded the entire time we were out there working with the decorations.  Two Downy Woodpeckers, one Hairy Woodpecker, two Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and one very persistent White-breasted Nuthatch who stayed right above me the whole time I was out there – I was sure it was going to poop on my head!  We do wonder what the birds and squirrels will think – how they will react.  The pots are filled with artificial greens but the gingerbread men hanging from the platform feeder are all suet.  So it will be interesting if any of the birds figure that out – and also figure out how to access.

And I probably should set up a website pool as to how long those bows will actually stay on those trees.  I do not put nails in trees – ever.  Trees are living things and from my point of view, never deserve that sort of treatment.  So the bows are on the trees with twine and duct tape and I am not sure there is enough duct tape in the world to keep them secure.  And while duct tape does cling to almost everything including your own fingers and itself, tree bark is gnarly and duct tape is not quite as clingy.  As I am typing this, I am looking out the window and already see one side of the bow on the left has come loose and is flapping in the wind.  I have hot coffee here at my desk, soft music playing, and am staying right here in my chair.  Tomorrow is another day!

And a big thank-you to Lara at GoWeb1 for suggesting to me that I should decorate – I am not sure i would have thought to do that without her suggestion.  Thanks, Lara!
